Solar Projects

Vineyard Power's mission, as a 21st century utility company, is to produce electricity from renewable and local resources while keeping the benefit within the community. This mission includes photovoltaics.

New legislations at the state level and federal level have formed a market-based incentive program and tax-credits on renewable energy systems in order to support companies like Vineyard Power (VP) in developing, commercial, and utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) here on Martha’s Vineyard.

Vineyard Power has begun development on two projects.

1) The Town of Aquinnah:  On November 2, 2011 Vineyard Power responded to a Request for Proposal (RFP), issued by the Town of Aquinnah, soliciting requests for the installation of a solar photovoltaic system on their one acre capped landfill.

The Town received two responses; Vineyard Power and Sunquest Energy, based in Florida. The Aquinnah Selectmen chose Vineyard Power with the town approving this selection at a Town Meeting on December 7, 2011.

The 50KW array will produce enough energy to power the Town's Municipal electrical load including the Town Offices, Police & Fire Stations, Library, street lights, and public bathrooms and eventually save the town over $10,000 per year in electricity costs.   We estimate this project will be producing electricity by the end of the summer and may be one of the first solar installations on a capped landfill in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

2) Cronigs:  The first phase of this innovative project will consist of two rows of solar electricity parking lot canopies, each located in the parking lot of Healthy Additions in Vineyard Haven.

The 128KW canopy array will provide approximately 160,000kWh of electricity to Cronig's a year and will also include electric vehicle charging stations for what we hope will help power an increasing fleet of electric vehicles in the years ahead.

We have begun the design and permitting process and are planning to begin construction during the end of March or early April.
